Packing Your Storage Unit Efficiently

Posted on February 27, 2017July 14, 2018 by Nissa Harris

If you’re moving from one home to another, then a storage unit would be an option to consider if you have furniture that you want to keep but don’t have room for at the time. Storage units come in all sizes depending on how much you must put in the unit. Before putting boxes and other belongings inside, there are a few tips to keep in mind so that you can store as much as possible and so that you can keep your belongings organized.

How Much Space ?

One of the initial considerations that you need to make is determining how much space you need in the unit. Although the price of a smaller unit might be appealing, it’s usually large enough for only a few totes and maybe a few pieces of furniture depending on the size of the items that you want to store. Most moving storage units Falmouth ME companies offer feature calculators to help you determine the size of the unit that will be large enough for the items that you have to store.

The Way It’s Packed

Before you put anything in the unit, you need to know how to box your belongings properly. Find boxes that are the right size for your items. Avoid using large boxes for heavy items because the box might be too heavy to move around. However, large boxes are ideal for soft blankets, towels, and other linens because of their lightweight. Wrap items that can break with newspaper or a soft material so that they don’t break.

Even though there are storage units of all sizes, you need to take advantage of the height of the unit instead of the width. Stack boxes as high as possible without them toppling over. Put heavier boxes on the bottom with smaller boxes on the top of the stack to keep everything balanced. Try to put the smaller boxes in the center of the larger ones to keep them from leaning to one side or another.

When you begin packing your belongings in the unit, leave a pathway to reach the back of the unit in case you need to get to something that is needed for your home before you empty everything out. If you’re storing dressers or other pieces of furniture that have drawers or empty space inside, then utilize this space to store smaller items instead of putting them in boxes. You can also put small boxes inside wardrobes, cabinets that are in the unit, a stove, or a refrigerator if you plan to store large appliances. If you’re able to use all of the space that is available, then it will be easier to take everything out of the unit when you’re ready to get your belongings into your new home.

Anything that you know that you’ll need right away when you get into your home should be stored at the front of the unit. Make sure you label each box with large letters or a list of the items that are inside the box so that you can easily put the box in the right room in your new home.
